Mayor Chu comments on New Taipei City’s well-being index

Several DPP city councilors today made a joint inquiry about New Taipei City’s newly evaluated well-being index. New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu responded that the city government would humbly accept criticism. He promised the city government will keep up the work it has done well on and strive to improve other work that still needs improvement.

Mayor Chu said New Taipei City has a lot of development potential. “Many citizens admiring the allure of New Taipei City have chosen it as their second home,” said Chu. “The city government shall continue working to make New Taipei City a favorable community to the citizens.”

Some councilors also urged the city government to enhance its suicide prevention mechanisms. Mayor Chu said the city government has done a list of things to curb suicides, which include controlling charcoal purchases, setting up suicide prevention signs, strengthening building surveillance, and employing forces from the religious, educational, and voluntary sectors to help depressed people out of suicidal notions.

As to Zhonggang Main Drainage, which was clogged by silt after heavy rains, Mayor Chu said he has ordered Department of Water Resources to immediately examine and evaluate for its design modification. To reduce future maintenance cost, the drainage needs to be first rigged for flood control and then recreation, he said.
