Mayor Chu presents the Excellent Spring Tea Award

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu attended today’s 2012 New Taipei City Premium Tea Fair. In addition to presenting the Excellent Spring Teas Awards to winners in 8 different contest areas, he visited many vendor stands and had conversations with the citizens.

In his speech, Mayor Chu congratulated all award-winning tea farmers and thanked them for their hard work. “Teas in Sanxia, Linkou, Shimen, Xizhi, Shenkeng, Xindian, Shiding, and Pinglin have become the hot product among Chinese tourists,” said Chu. “Therefore, it has become an important task to strengthen tea brand authenticity in order to curb counterfeit tea.”

Additionally, Mayor Chu mentioned that in response to recent healthy diet boom, New Taipei City Government has been promoting organic farming, which was well accepted by farmers and sprouted a new kind of merchandise with promising outlook -- the organic tea.

Thanks to modern tea farmers being active in environment protection, tea plantation not only does not harm local environments, but it rather helps with soil and water conservation, Chu said.

Mayor Chu also encouraged tourists to visit Pinglin. He said the beautiful mountains and waters in Pinglin make it perfect for low-carbon travel.

Mayor Chu then presented the Excellent Spring Tea awards to eight winners from different areas, which included Pinglin, Shiding, Sanxia, Xindian, Shenkeng, Xizhi, Linkou, and Pingxi. Chu said he was happy to see these tea farmers recognized for their hard work and wished they could have even more outstanding outcome in the future.

Besides Mayor Chu, New Taipei City Councilor Chen Yijun also attended today’s ceremony and gave her congratulation to award winners.
