Mayor Chu attends Senior College commencement

The Senior College celebrated the 14th commencement today at the 6th floor auditorium of New Taipei City Government. Mayor Chu was present at the commencement to share the students’ joy and excitement.

Many of the students in Senior College were retired professors, generals, or school principals. They aspire to learn new knowledge and make new friends. In his speech, Chu praised the students for their pursuit of lifelong learning and wished those completing their bachelor degrees would continue for master degrees while those completing their master degrees would continue for PhDs.

This year’s graduation includes 24 classes and 820 students, among whom 171 won the perfect attendance awards, 278 completed their bachelor degrees in 3 years, and 141 completed their PhDs in 6 years.

According to Social Welfare Department, among all students attending the commencement today there are 31 of them over 80 years old and 53 couples. The most eldest graduate student was the 97-year-old Mrs. Liu Qinzhi attending pottery class.

As the Social Welfare Department pointed out, New Taipei City Government not only has been providing economic support for elders but also aspires to transcend their life through encouraging lifelong learning. Through continuous learning and making new friends, senior people could then grasp a new life after their retirement.
