Mayor Chu pushes for clampdown on domestic violence

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu today urged Department of Social Welfare to tackle domestic violence. Through social services for high-risk families and community support, Mayor Chu looked to ensure the safety of all women and children by taking a proactive approach.

During the city administration conference today, Department of Social Welfare gave a special report on its plan of supporting local women, which includes promotion of women’s rights, campaign for gender equality, and nurturing women leaders. According to Commissioner of Social Welfare Department, the public daycare centers in Xindianankang and Taishan would open in August; another daycare center in Xinzhuang would later open in September.

Commenting on the special report by Social Welfare Department, Mayor Chu said the fact that females comprised above three-fourths of the total victim number of domestic violence is not to be taken lightly. He suggested tackling the problem through managing safety-net social services, community support, and information related to education as well as social order.

In addition, Mayor Chu would like to recognize the hard work done by women and encourage their promotion. Pointing out that females comprises three-fourths of social work volunteers, Mayor Chu wished female students from senior colleges could bring their husbands to join the social workforce.
