New Taipei City Government gathers a team of school crossing guards

To ensure road safety for students commuting to school on foot, New Taipei City Government today put together a team of volunteer school crossing guards. The government appointed Commissioner of Education Department, Lin Tengchiao, as the general commander of the team, and set up in each school a branch led by a chief.

Mayor Chu said he would like to thank these volunteers for helping students commute to school safely. He also called out to all drivers, asking them to drive through school areas slowly and carefully.

Demonstrating its kind spirit, Hotai Motor Company donated 8000 sets of equipments for use by school crossing guards. Mayor Chu praised that such act by Hotai Motor Company is a fine example of cooperation between the corporation and the government.

At the inauguration ceremony today, Mayor Chu wore a crossing guard vest and handed the team flag to the general commander, Lin Tengchiao. Later, an elementary school chorus team performed the singing of “A Grateful Heart” to express their appreciation for the hard work of the volunteer crossing guards.

77-year-old Wang Yuanchih is the most elderly member in the crossing guard team. Living near Zhongshan Elementary School, he wakes up everyday at 7 o’clock in the morning to help children cross the road. He said he is happy to see students going to school everyday safely.

According to Department of Education, the officials will confer gold, silver, and bronze star awards respectively on those in the team who have served for over 5, 3, and 2 years and accumulated over 1000, 500, and 300 hours of volunteering. An award ceremony will be held annually to celebrate these special achievements.
