Bali Pomelo Festival kicks off

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu today attended the Pomelo Festival at Bali to present awards to winners of the New Taipei City pomelo contest. Mayor Chu announced that there would be pomelo sales in the following days and would like to welcome everyone to visit Bali to taste the sweet, juicy pomelos.

According to Mayor Chu, the Pomelo Festival this year would have a joint sale of pomelos coming from different producing areas, making it very different from the past festivals. The joint sale, managed by farmer’s associations from all pomelo producing areas, could not only stimulate cooperation between farmers, but also allow New Taipei citizens to taste all different kinds of pomelos, he said.

According to Agriculture Department, the total plantation area of pomelo farms in New Taipei City is about 470 hectares with expected total production amounting to 6574 tons. Although Bali is the primary pomelo production area, other production areas in New Taipei City also include Xindian, Tamsui, Shulin, Tucheng, Sanxia, Wugu, Linkou, Sanzhi, Ruifang, Xizhi, Jinshan, and Shuangxi.

Agriculture Department reported that most pomelo farms have passed the pesticide use testing. Two pomelo farms would also soon adopt organic farming. New Taipei City Government would like to invite more farmers to join the trend of organic farming.
