Two Taipei Cities focus on bidding 2023 Asian Games

The joint bid, formed between Taipei City and New Taipei City, of the 2017 International World Games, 2019, and 2023 Asian Games was the focus during New Taipei City Council meeting on the 5th of November. Mayor Eric Chu hoped to raise two cities’ visibility on an international scale by co-hosting international competitions.

The host city for the 2019 Asian Games will be announced on 8th of November; however, Taipei City abandoned to bid the event in March early this year. Councilor Shen Fahui was concerned if the New Taipei City council was informed prior to the decision.

Chu emphasized that the purpose of the joint bid was to win the election to host both Asian Games and International World Games. He indicated that Taipei City would host the 2017 International World Games; in addition, the most recent two Asian Games were both held in East Asia cities. Thus, two cities decided to put their focus on bidding the 2023 Asian Games.

Chu said using different ways to win over the elections to host international competitions is important. When the International World Game takes place in Taipei, New Taipei City will be the assisting city. Likewise, if 2023 Asian Game happened in New Taipei City, Taipei would be the assisting city.

In addition, councilor Zhen Shirong acknowledged the policy of promoting characteristic schools from the city government. Many local and foreign city officials have been attracted to the schools to learn from New Taipei City. He suggested the city government to establish a visiting mechanism to eliminate any impact on students during their lectures.

Mayor Chu promised that the city government would have Ministry of Education set up a standard operating procedure for schools to follow. The city government would offer any additional assistance.

Several topics had also been covered on Nov. 5th, such as the ‘3 Rings & 3 Lines’ transit network system, urban land consolidation for parks and recreation, and debt financing.
