 All-City High School Athletic Games sees great competition


The 2015 New Taipei City High School Athletic Games, beginning on the 4th of March, will hold a four-day series of competitions at the Banqiao First Sports Ground; 77 schools and 1329 competitors are participating in a variety of track and field events. March 4th was the opening ceremony and Mayor Chu Liluan was in attendance to support the competitors and challenge them to go beyond their personal bests.

During his speech, Mayor Chu thanked everyone for coming out to this year’s all-city games for high school students. He said that this event is a great opportunity for fostering New Taipei City’s athletic talents. The mayor stated that high school is an important time for sports development among the students; this event is not only serves to engage the students, but it is also a vital opportunity for developing talents. He wished all the competitors best and that they would continue to improve.

In today’s opening ceremony, the student representative is Linkou High School’s Zhuo Chengqi; Mr. Zhou broke the national high school freestyle swimming record in 2014 with a time of 15:49.74. The ceremony torch bearer is San-Chung Commercial and Industrial Vocational High School’s Zeng Ting Wei; Mr. Zeng won the gold medal for the 5000 meters run in 2014, and he broke the event record of 3000 meters steeplechase (9:24.05) with his time of 9:19.68. The other torch bearer is Sanming High School’s Lin Caiying; Ms. Lin received a god medal for her performance in last year’s Pole Vault, and she won the Pole Vault bronze in the Second Asia Youth Games as the Taiwanese representative.

Education Department reports that this year’s athletic games includes judo, table tennis, wrestling, archery, badminton, Taekwondo, swimming, tennis, and track and fields. Other than track and field events, all of the events completed at the end of the February. This year’s national games will take place at New Taipei City from April 25th to 30th. The theme of the national games will be “We are young.” The department wishes all of the athletes the best and that New Taipei, as the host, can improve on its last year’s record of 64 gold, 64 silver, and 64 bronze.
