Erchong Floodway Wetland makes a perfect wild duck haven

Within a mere three months, New Taipei City Government successfully transformed the Erchong Weir Wetland into a “wild duck haven” of the greater Taipei area. Mr. Chen Shenxian, Secretary-general of New Taipei City Government, and several guests attended the inauguration ceremony of the wild duck habitat to commemorate this distinguished achievement for local tourism and ecological preservation.

Mr. Chen explained that revamping of Erchong Weir Wetland is an important part of the overarching dredging project. Taking both riparian tourism and ecological preservation into consideration, Water Resource Department of New Taipei City Government adopted a short-term, low-budget approach to reorganize local floodplains with neighboring rivers. As the result, the Erchong Weir Wetland attracts thousands of wild ducks to inhabit at the area during winter time and has indeed become the “wild duck haven”.

“In addition to the Blue Highway program (cruise ship service along Keelung and Tamsui River) we have been promoting, the City Government team also plans on transforming the Erchong Floodway area into a metropolitan park, just like New York City’s Central Park,” said Chen.

Senior Guides from Wild Bird Society of Taipei led citizens to visit Erchong Weir Wetland and exhibited the ecology and habitat of wild duck on the day of inauguration ceremony. Many citizens marveled at the spectacle of thousands of wild ducks living in the area.

Zhang Yanguang, Commissioner of Water Resource Department, added that New Taipei City Government also offers free tour guide services for the artificial wetlands along Dahan River and welcomes all groups and individuals to visit the wetlands for amazing ecological fun.
