International Drum Art Festival promotes traditional art

The “2015 New Taipei City International Dum Art Festival” closing ceremony took place on the 9/6 at Tucheng District’s Sports Arena. The mayor was at the festival to enjoy the art of drums and to express gratitude towards the performers. The scene was filled with intense drum beats as the audience immersed themselves in the experience.

Mayor Chu said that the New Taipei Drum Art Festival first started in the Xinzhuang District and later expanded to a city-wide event. Every year the festivities grows in excitement and variety. This event is already well-known throughout the country, the Mayor said. Not only does this event promote the art of drums, the Mayor added, but it serves to ensure the passing on of traditional art forms.

The Culture Department reports that U-Theatre embodies today’s Eastern Taiwan drum culture, and the group’s performance of “Warrior’s Sword” served as a great closing note to the festival. Other than drums, the Culture Department added, there were wooden and metal instrument performances, long-staff drumming, dancing, and other innovative performances, combining drums with martial art, dance, and theatre.

The Culture Department stated that this is the ninth year of the “New Taipei City International Drum Art Festival.” To allow for more student participation, the organizers specifically asked drum teams from schools to join in this year’s Night of Drums event. Through large performance venues such as this, the city looks to promote domestic drum art culture and to encourage the passing on of the traditions. More over, the city looks to spark cross-domain exchanges that can lead to even better performances and teams, opening up new frontiers and visions for New Taipei City’s International Drum Art Festival.
