 Mayor presents awards for filial piety, social education and service, and continuing education


New Taipei City Government held the “2015 Filial Piety, Social Education and Service, and Continuing Education Schools and Staff Awards.” The mayor presented the awards to all of the honorees. The mayor said that the essence of education is not only found in school, but also should be visible in family, individuals and the community. For each of the honoree today, the mayor continued, he or she serves as an important member of society and helps to build a better foundation for the community.

Mayor Chu said that filial piety is one of the most important virtues in the Chinese culture; the honorees today are those who have lived out this virtue, and their actions are commendable and worth learning from. The recipients of the social education and service awards and outstanding continuing education schools and staff awards have demonstrated selflessness and contributed to society with their actions. The mayor says that this event is meant to promote the importance of virtues such as filial piety and to bring awareness to the fruits of labor of professionals working in social well-being.

The Education Department reports that today’s “Filial Piety Awards” were given to 11 people. Among the honorees were Mr. Daomin Gao, Yucheng Deng from Beida High School in Sanxia, and Jiazhen Wu of Ruifeng Vocational School from the Ruifeng District; they were also recognized with a national award. To care for his mother who had suffered a stroke, Mr. Gao resigned from his position as a manager in a well-known fashion company; it has been 30 years since then, Mr. Gao’s dedication has not wavered. Mr. Deng cares for his sister, who has suffered from a rare illness and autism, and also helps his mother with household chores and taking care of his father, who suffered a stroke. Ms. Wu came from a single-parent family; nevertheless, she often takes on the duty of caring for her great grandmother and grandmother. Ms. Wu is also in applied vocational classes and works part-time to help the family’s finances.

The Education Department indicates that other than the “Filial Piety Awards,” there were 8 groups and 17 individuals honored with the “Social Education and Service Award,” and 10 schools and 5 school staff members honored in with the “Outstanding Continuing Education Award.”
