Adopt, don’t abandon: city helping to find owners for animals

New Taipei City Mayor, Eric Chu, was in attendance of New Taipei City Government’s “2015 Adopt-a-pet Party,” held today at city hall’s Public Square. The mayor said that, starting from March 1 of this year, the city has began its zero-euthanasia policy. Every animal is a life, said the mayor; he called for residents to work with the city towards the goal of zero-abandonment to address the issue of stray animals and to find a home for every animal.

Mayor Chu indicated that the city government has enacted its policy of zero-euthanasia since March 1 of this year. Additionally, the city collaborated with pet shop businesses to set up “adoption stations”. This program began on May 13, 2015 and, by August 17, 27 stations have been set up. An estimated 212 animals have been adopted, and the next goal would be to find a home for every animal, said the mayor.

Mayor Chu also said that, whether residents are considering to adopt or purchase a pet, patience and care are definite requirements. Every animal is a life, and we need to view them as such. The mayor called for the residents of the city to work towards zero abandonment and help resolve the problem of stray animals in the city.

The Agriculture Department reports that today’s event saw many exciting activities and programs; aside from having celebrity representative, A-xi, joining in the event, there was an animal fashion walkway show. The Animal Protection Section was on site to provide 200 free rabies vaccination shots and 200 free “pet ID chips.” This event will continue until 5pm of tomorrow (September 6); the location remains the Public Square next the New Taipei City Hall. The Department encourages more residents to participate and to respond to the call of “adopt, don’t buy” and “adopt, don’t abandon.”
