Mayor Chu presents awards to outstanding workers

New Taipei City Government today hosted 2012 Labor Day’s Outstanding Worker and Driver Awards Ceremony. Mayor Chu attended the event to present awards to 361 outstanding workers. He said that workers regardless of which industries they are from are all very important to the society and praised that workers become the foundation of national development through producing all kinds of essential services and products.


Because New Taipei City is the biggest municipality with most workers in Taiwan, Mayor Chu stressed that labor rights have always been government’s highest priority. Since its administrative city upgrade, New Taipei City has been recruiting businesses to increase job opportunities. Under the trend of globalization, New Taipei City shall not just compete with other domestic cities but with other global cities, Chu said.


Mayor Chu also mentioned the Labor Standards Inspection Office, which was established by New Taipei Government to enhance workplace safety and prevent occupational disasters. On the other hand, Labor Rights Fund, another establishment by New Taipei City since the city upgrade, can provide immediate assistance and legal protection to workers.


Today’s awardees include 11 outstanding workers, 227 model workers, 10 physically or mentally challenged model workers, 10 model foreign workers, 3 senior labor union officials, 19 excellent labor unions, 5 excellent Labor Welfare Committees, and 76 outstanding drivers.

 

According to Department of Labor, entries for this year’s award competition included foreign model workers for the first time. The 10 outstanding foreign workers that won the awards are form Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines. Department of Labor said these awards can help the public to recognize their hard work and contribution to the society.
