Mayor Chu inspects flood control work in Shulin

With May 1st marking the start of flood season long ago, New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu today led Water Resource, Agriculture, Public Works, and Fire Departments to inspect flood control work in Shulin District.

Mayor Chu first arrived at Shulin District Office to listen to District Executive’s briefing on flood control work and landslide emergency evacuation plan. Claiming that disaster prevention must be started from the grass roots level, Chu urged the government team to spare no pains to prevent any possible flooding in the area. Specifically, he wants the government to analyze the causes for past floods, prepare evacuation plans in case of heavy rains or typhoons, and make sure all drainage ditches, side ditches, sewers, and rivers are clutter-free.

Wearing a splash contamination suit, Mayor Chu entered the Xianghan Sewer between Zhongzheng Road and Da’an Road for inspection. He ordered the Water Resource Department to finish the flood-control project for Zhongzheng Road by the end of month. He also asked the construction team not to leave any construction debris inside the sewer so that no clutter would happen during heavy rains or typhoons.

In his remark on recent floodings caused by cloudbursts, Mayor Chu said a thorough inspection is needed to enhance clearing of sewers and ditches.

According to Fire Department, they will cooperate with Shulin District Office to help prevent car drivers from getting stranded by floods in the future. They also invited Shulin District Office to station in the Emergency Operation Center of New Taipei City Government, forming a joint flood prevention team.
