First youth library in New Taipei City opens

The first youth library in New Taipei City opened at Xindian today with New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu hosting the opening ceremony. After 8 months of revamping, the long-waited library for youths finally had its launch. Mayor Chu said the city government, having revamped 7 libraries since its municipal upgrade, will continue its effort on creating a better reading environment for the public.

Mayor Chu remarked that libraries of many international cities have a very disparate design from traditional libraries. These libraries usually have ample space, integrate with advanced modern technology, and show a savvy taste for fashion; therefore, youths are more attracted to visit them. Chu said the addition of a youth library seems perfect for the municipal upgrade of New Taipei City and wished it become the learning hub frequented by the youngsters in future.

According to Cultural Affairs Department, New Taipei City has been revamping the youth library since last September, which is the seventh library in New Taipei City undergoing renewal. The library stands seven stories tall and contains two basement levels. It hosts a total of 35,000 books specifically chosen for young readers’ interest and includes library sections such as “arts and culture section”, “mutual discussion section”, “multimedia section”, “youth reading section”, “periodicals section”, “family reading section”, etc. There is even an outdoor area reserved for dance training and other recreational activities.

Many events were hosted on the day of opening ceremony, attracting many parents and children to the library. For example, there are a street dance performance performed by World Street Dance Tournament contenders, picture book writer Jimmy Liao’s signing event, an exhibition of the famous NBA player Jeremy Lin, a team puzzle game, and a youth art exhibition.
