Mayor Chu opposes against extending lifespan of the 1st and 2nd nuclear plants

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu today during City Council meeting expressed his strong opposition to extend lifespan of the first and second nuclear power plants. He also reiterated that he won’t allow the fourth nuclear power plant into operation unless it is protected by well-rounded safety measures.

In the afternoon, Councilor Chang questioned Mayor Chu whether he had the determination to speak on behalf of citizens to the central government their opposition against lifespan extension of the 1st and 2nd nuclear power plants as well as demand for a more rigorous examination on nuclear safety measures.

Stating that clean energy is the global trend and the consensus of political parties in Taiwan, Mayor Chu promised that the city government will discuss with Taipower and the central government to enhance nuclear safety and determine whether to continue using nuclear energy.

“Protecting lives and properties of the citizens is the government’s first priority,” said Chu. He assured that he will speak on behalf of 4 million citizens to the central government about their opposition to lifespan extension of the 1st and 2nd nuclear power plant.

As to whether the 4th nuclear power plant will enter operation, Mayor Chu restated that the operation won’t start until the authorities have assured well-rounded nuclear safety measures.
