Mayor Chu resolves to help victims of drunk driving

During today’s City Conference, several NPP councilors questioned New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu about subjects such as drunk driving and drugs abuse on campus.

In response to problems regarding drunk driving, Mayor Chu stated the city government is planning to launch stronger crackdown on drunk driving by adopting a much more rigorous alcohol testing and enacting stricter policies that prohibit drunk drivers from driving again. He said the government will cooperate with Association for Victims Support and Legal Aid Foundation to offer help, especially to pay litigious costs for victims of drunk driving, or their families in case of fatality.

On the other hand, as to drugs abuse on campus, Mayor Chu said the key is to start anti-drug campaign in schools and curb the dissemination of a variety of drugs, especially Ketamine, which is listed as a controlled drug in the country. He reminded that such anti-drug effort is not just Police Department’s responsibility but also schools’ responsibility. Therefore, Police Department, Education Department, and Health Department will cooperate in future to work on curbing drugs abuse on campus, he said.

Mayor Chu also reiterated the importance of holding the periodical anti-drug conference. For this year’s youth project, he hopes that through enhancing anti-drug sentiment on campus the government can successfully prevent students from laying their hands on drugs.
