Mayor Chu presents Mayor’s Awards to graduate students

New Taipei City Government today hosted the Mayor’s Award Ceremony for outstanding high school, junior high school, and elementary school graduate students. Mayor Chu attended the ceremony to present awards to winners. He first would like to apologize for the unexpected delay of ceremony caused by Typhoon Talim. He then reminded all award-winning students that the Mayor’s awards they received today represented recognition from the 4 million New Taipei citizens and they, upon earning such recognition, should aspire to do greater things in the future.

New Taipei City is an epitome of Taiwan – no matter you come form urban or remote areas, you can earn support and recognition with great effort, Mayor Chu said.

According to Education Department, for this year there were a total of 5688 graduate students winning the Mayor’s awards: among them 3246 were either high school or junior high school graduates and 2442 were elementary school graduates. The Mayor’s Awards for this year were divided into two categories: “Excellent Leaning Award” and “Special Distinction Award”. The former one is conferred on those who achieve the best academic record in school and the latter one is conferred on those who have notable deeds in sports, arts, volunteering, etc.

Mr. Liao, a winner for this year’s Excellent Learning Award, has earned admission to the prestigious Jianguo High School. Despite his listening disability, he has been working very hard and became successful in school. “I would like to win the same award again when I graduate from high school,” said Laio.

On the other hand, Mr. Chang, a winner for this year’s Special Distinction Award, has won 7th place in 2012 New Taipei Track and Field Competition, 1st place for combined events in 2011 United Sporting Competition, and an excellent award for 2011 Gospel Songs Singing Contest. He said winning the Mayor’s award made him more confident of himself and ready to challenge greater things. He would like to become a professional athlete and contend in Olympics in the future, Chang said
