Mayor Chu pledges to crack down on drunk driving

New Taipei City Police Department today at Road Traffic Safety Conference reported its work on cracking down drunk driving. Thinking of the recent frequent occurrences of drunk driving and the many families destroyed as the consequence, Mayor Chu said he was determined to bring severe punishments on all drunk drivers.

According to Mayor Chu, every time the police strengthen their crackdown, officials see a drop in drunk driving cases. For example, the recent strengthening of crackdown increased the number of caught drunk drivers by 30% and as a result effectively decreased the number of drunk driving accidents by 70%. Unfortunately, officials also see a regular resurgence of drunk driving after every crackdown. This says that many people tend to drunk driver when they no longer see a great chance of getting caught. Therefore, Mayor Chu said it is necessary to make drunk-driving traffic stop a constant and regular procedure.

Due to the limited number of police officers, Mayor Chu said it is crucial to effectively deploy police officers to conduct drunk-driving traffic stop on specific accident-prone road sections at night.

As to road traffic safety for children, the Taipei Motor Vehicle Supervision Office in its traffic stop report reported that overloading became the most frequent violation by children’s buses, which is about 52% of all violation cases of children’s buses. Many violators, after being caught, allegedly continue overloading their buses.

To counter such violation, Mayor Chu stressed that the government should first find the companies responsible for modifying the children’s buses. Through moral lecturing and legal enforcement, the government seeks to make sure none of the companies would provide modification of children’s bus that allows overloading of passengers.
