Mayor Chu attends the 18th nuclear safety drill

 To prevent possible nuclear disaster, the 18th nuclear safety drill was held at Baochangkeng Training Center, Xizhi District today. Mayor of New Taipei City, Eric Chu, and Vice Premier of Executive Yuan, Jiang Yihuah, were present to inspect the drill. Both expressed their concern for possible nuclear disaster and determination to make people safe from nuclear disaster.

 

Mayor Chu especially stressed the importance of having 100% nuclear safety protection, as New Taipei City is the nuclear hub hosting nuclear plant No.1, No.2, and No.4, which is still under construction. He also called for Legislators to enact specific laws concerning nuclear waste management and use of nuclear funds so that citizens could finally be relieved of the worries on the nuclear issue.

Vice Premier Jiang praised that the drill at Baochangkeng, among all the drills he has inspected, is the best in terms of conducting radiation analysis, evacuation, and medical care. He was assured that New Taipei City Government can provide citizens with best care and protection if a disaster does break out in the future.


Jiang also called for Atomic Energy Council, Department of Economy, and Taiwan Power Company to take Fukushima nuclear disaster as a warning that nuclear management needs to be more stringent in order to guarantee people’ safety. He also urged that in the case of possible nuclear radiation leak, the nuclear power plant staff should conduct resident evacuation much more carefully than when in case of landslides or typhoons.

 

According to Fire Department, the 18th nuclear safety drill was split into four stages and hosted in four places. Today’s drill at Baochangkeng Training Center was the fourth stage, which focused on emergency evacuation, evacuee radiation scan, evacuee registration, evacuee relocation, and subsidizing of essential goods.


Special guests attending today’s drill included Legislator Li Chinghua and City Councilor Bai Peiru.
