Mayor Chu praises government cleaners for their hard work

On October 24th, New Taipei City Government hosted the 1st Outstanding Government Cleaner Awards ceremony. Mayor Chu attended the award ceremony to present awards to 100 outstanding government cleaners.

At the award ceremony, Mayor Chu said he really appreciated the hard work by government cleaners, which allowed New Taipei City to be nominated by Environmental Protection Administration as the “Cleanest City in Taiwan” for the 5th consecutive year. He promised that the government would continue working for the welfare of all government cleaners and hoped they could keep up their hard work and possibly perform even better in the future.

According to Environmental Protection Department, the 100 awardees were selected from the 6000 government cleaners in the city for their extraordinary hard work and diligent attitude. Their jobs include driving garbage trucks, brooming streets, recycling, cleaning gutters, etc.

Mr. Li Chunji, a former Marine who has now served at the government cleaner team for 20 years, recalled the year when swine flu broke out and he had to transport the pigs. He said it was the most excruciating time of his career and he could barely keep himself conscious after 10+ days of working over 10 hours, but by reminding himself that he was doing this for the health and safety of the citizens, he knew his hard work was worthwhile.

To express appreciation for government cleaners and boost their morale, Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan have passed an enactment that makes October 25th the official “Cleaners’ Day.” The city government would celebrate this special day by holding a festival where there are many interesting booths and awesome stage performances.
