Mayor Chu Encourages students to become industry leaders

Mayor Eric Chu stated four essential characteristics of becoming industry leaders as an inspiration for the students during his attendance of the “Cross-Straits College Students Global Environment Forum” this morning. These four characteristics include, having visions, being a team player, capable of establishing systems and think with entrepreneurial minds.

“Cross-Straits College Student Global Environment Forum”, a joint event of World Leadership Education Foundation (WLEF) and Northern Jiaotong University, took place in the New Taipei City Government. The theme of the event was set to be “Green Miracles”. The Mayor, along with the Commissioner of the Environmental Protection Department and few others were invited to have close interactions with the students.

During his opening speech, Mayor Chu pointed out that first of all, in order to become industry leaders, one must be visionary, be able to sacrifice and constantly seeking for self improvements. He further emphasized that tolerance and visions are not given, but gained through learning and interactions.

Next, the Mayor brought up the “Anser in Flight Theory” to explain the importance of group work. He said that, during the travel of anser, a v-shaped was usually formed among the flock, with the leader being at the tip of the v leading the group ahead at full speed. If the anser were to fly alone, it would be lonely, with no sense of directions which result in inefficient flying. The leading anser are subject to change among the flock which allowed everyone to be a leader and have its shares of responsibility.

Then, a system must be established, for a group to follow. So no one will be fighting to be the leader of the group. Once the system had established, constant adjustments and improvements have to be made to achieve its optimal efficiency.

Lastly, Mayor Chu also emphasized that culture is like the software of a company. He used Apple Computers as an example. Aside from the design, the software application inside the computer is just as important. Thus a driven company culture is an essential software for any successful group.

On the issues of ecological environment, Mayor felt that the lack of visions from leaders all around resulted in harms done on the atmosphere. Humans are the ones responsible for all damages that our environment undergo today. A bond between mankind and environment must be formed for both to coexist. New Taipei City leads the example by cutting down the daily garage disposal from 2,500 tons a day to 1,200 tons a day. Local Automotive Industry is also working on the development of electric car to show an effort in protecting the environment.

In addition, two theses titled “Abundance & Beauty: Clean City New Vision- New Taipei City” and “Future Traffic Vision- Yulon Motor Luxgen Electric Car” were published as a joint effort of students from NTU, NCHU, CMU, UC Berkeley and NTUE. This coordination allowed student to gain a better understanding of the newly upgraded New Taipei City, as well as development of the electric motor in both Taiwan and China.

Participants of the forum included 9 schools from China and 12 schools from Taiwan which amount to a total combined of 200 students and faculty. This event was a great opportunity for students from both countries to closely communicate and better understand each others’ advantages
