Mayor Eric Chu: Reading is the key to learning well

 New Taipei City Government had cooperated with Common Wealth Magazine to hold International Reading Education Forum for five consecutive years. Mayor Eric Chu indicated that the education is the hope project, and the government had to constantly dedicate on the education policy. Chu also made an appeal on the media to do a more professional report on social issues to make the societies healthy.

There are 42 teachers awarded the Reading Model Teacher on International Reading Education Forum as well as two elementary teachers from New Taipei City awarded the Best Reading Helper. Teacher Song Tingmei from Bali Elementary School used stories to lead the student into diversity thinking, and it had made student’s reading skills into a creative level.

Teacher Zen Yanping in Heng Shan Elementary School integrated reading activities with student’s life through some strategies such as book clubs and family reading activities, providing the remote students with plentiful and interesting reading opportunities.


Chu indicated that the education policy was built to create a better life for our next generation. Education in Taiwan had made children in burden, and Chu shared the same feeling with the parents and teachers.

Chu said that he would continue working with education experts to improve the learning environment, and hoped it will not only ease children’s learning burden, but also make parents and teachers worry no more.

Executive Chairman of Common Wealth Magazine had been concerned about the education issues and had written in-depth reports on Taiwan’s education for a long time. In addition, Common Wealth Magazine had just awarded Wu Shunwun Foundation Award for Best International and Continental Reporting Awards on December.

Common Wealth Magazine had a regular annual report on education issues, and their profession was a model for other news media in Taiwan. Chu made an appeal on the media for in-depth reports on social issues in stead of simple daily news.


International Reading Education Forum held in Sanhe Junior High School attracted thousands of teachers. The education could be much better through teacher’s dedication, hard work and encouragement on children’s learning. In addition, Chu wished the children could learn happily and entered the library willingly, adding that he enjoyed the moment where every children sat quietly in the library and read.
