Chu encourages students to write and read

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu attended The 6th United Daily News Composition Cup Award Ceremony.

Chu said that children today have overused the 3C products, and he encouraged teachers and parents to train their kids to get into habit on reading books instead of surfing internet articles.

Nowadays the education in Taiwan pays more attention on English and Science, and neglects the importance of Chinese, including reading and writing. Chu encouraged the attendance to keep participating in such events and to lend support in Chinese education.

Xing Guo-ning, President of the UDN appreciated the enthusiastic participation from teachers, parents, and students. He also appreciated the support from New Taipei City Government and several departments.

Wang Xin-yi, the student from Guoguang Elementary School who won the first prize on elementary composition group, said that writing is her interest, and she spends about 30 to 60 minutes sharping her writing skills everyday. Tan Yu-an, the student from Banqiao High School who won the first price on high school composition group, said that writing could not only express her feelings, but also gain a different specialty.

The number of participants increased from 3,800 to 17,190 this year, and 210 students were awarded. In addition, the student who won the excellent awards or above could join the National Composition Finals on January 13.
