Mayor Chu visited the sheltered workshop

New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu visited the Fantech Sheltered Workshop and Children Are Us Sheltered Workshop to experience the process of making LED lamps and cake decorating on January 24. Chu appreciated the hard work from Children Are Us and encouraged the citizens to purchase and support the products in sheltered workshop.

Chu indicated that New Taipei City has 21 sheltered workshops, and the sheltered workshops not only provide jobs for the intellectual disables, but also make these children gain some sense of accomplishment during work. Chu hoped these kinds of social enterprises could flourish and benefit the disables.

The Fantech Sheltered Workshop, established on May, 2011, now has 14 intellectually disabled employees, and it’s the first workshop manufacturing LED lamps in Taiwan. The Director of the workshop Du Shunji introduced the production process, and had an employee operate on the lamp. Then Du invited the Mayor to join and experience the process.

After the operation experience, Chu said that the process needs a lot of skills and concentration to ensure the quality of the product.

The Children Are Us Sheltered Workshop was a workshop which provided bread made by the disable children. Chu also participated in the process of making cakes and bread.

In addition, Chu said that the Children Are Us not only passed the ISO9001 approval in 2012, but also provided bread and cakes to the bakery in City Government Hall, and those had always been the great breakfast choice for the City Government staffs.

To encourage purchasing the products in Sheltered Workshop, the City Government made a new plan for the companies in New Taipei City─ that is, a company will be praised by the city government if it purchases over NT$300,000.

The Sheltered Workshop will release several kinds of New Year Gift, and for more details on the new products, please visit the 2013 workshop EBook: http://www.smenet.org.tw/Sheltered/default1.html for more information.
