 Applying Big Data; Chu Liluan looks to innovate traditional industries


Mayor Chu Liluan attended the “2015 New Taipei Big Data Forum. At the forum, he said that Big Data is one of the most important technologies of the 21st century; in terms of both of high-tech and traditional industries, this field presents a great opportunities, but it is also a great challenge.

Mayor Chu elaborated that as the largest municipality in Taiwan, New Taipei City has the responsibility to promote Big Data and inject new innovation into traditional industries. Traditional industries is an especially key area for New Taipei’s economy. For this event, New Taipei City collaborated with the Ministry of Economic Affairs to introduce the concept of “Big Data” to traditional industries. Mayor Chu believes that this field can bring new economic opportunities to production, retail, and businesses.

The Economic Development Department reports that as the era of Big Data arrives, the city government and the Ministry of Economic Affairs are working together to promote “Demonstration of Applying Big Data Analysis on Traditional Industries.” By using Big Data analysis, this project aims to help businesses foresee business trends and opportunities. By collecting data through various channels, the project analyzes and optimizes business potentials and provides market trends and consumer perspectives.

To elevate New Taipei’s traditional industries, the organizers invited Stephen Brobst, who is a former member of the US Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee (established under President Obama). Dr. Brobst used “Big Data, Big Value” as the topic, honed in on the development of New Taipei’s industries and characters, and explored new opportunities in transforming the city’s traditional industries. The goal is to uncover industry potentials, firmly establish the value of traditional industries in New Taipei, and march forth into new frontiers in the era of Big Data.
