 National Cleaning Week: fresh start to the new year

 

Today (Feb. 14) at the Sunlight Green of the Sports Village of Xinzhuang District, the city held the “2015 National Cleaning Week Commitment Ceremony.” Mayor Chu Liluan was in attendance to support the participants, including Xinzhuang village chiefs, residents, clean-up volunteers, and sponsor representatives. In his speech, he especially thanked the volunteers, citizens, village chiefs, and all of district cleaning teams for their past effort; New Taipei City has won the honor of being cleanest city in the nation for a number of years. 184 volunteer couples were at event; the mayor wished them a “meaningful” Valentine’s Day.

Chu said that National Cleaning Week always come right before the Lunar New Year; the hope is that people can use this period to clean up their homes and the surrounding environment and welcome in the new year with a fresh start. He specifically pointed out that New Taipei City won the title of the cleanest city in the nation due to the hard work of all of the volunteers, citizens, village chiefs, and tireless cleaning teams.


Mayor Chu said that for this year’s National Cleaning Week, the city is showing full commitment. He said that every district and village is participating in the event; Xinzhuang District is very active, where the village chief is leading the volunteers and residents in joining in the event. The mayor said that today is Valentine’s Day, and he sees many young couples and older couples at the event, participating in protecting the environment. He thinks this is very meaningful; the mayor also thanked the cleaning teams in each district, who are sacrificing New Year’s Eve and the fourth day of the new year to collect trash and clean the environment for the citizens.

During the activities, Mayor Chu also praised the corporate sponsors who have received environmental recognitions, including Pecos, Family Mart, Hi-Life, Taiwan MacDonald’s, An-Shin Food Services, Matsusei Supermarkets, Chuan-lian, and others. The mayor thanked them for their donations to the hard working city cleaning teams.

Today’s event coincided with Valentine’s Day. A couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chen, at the scene, answered the call to clean on National Cleaning Week by spending their Valentine’s Day doing clean-up. The mayor specifically thanked them with a “Rose Soap” and other gifts and wished them a meaningful Valentine’s Day.

Later in the day, the mayor visited the second-hand market for environmental items. The market itself was set up by cleaning teams from various districts, and the proceeds from these sales will be donated toward charities. Lastly, the mayor took up a broom and cleaned together with the community members.
