 Vocational students commended by Mayor in awards ceremony

In representing the city, Mayor Eric Chu handed out awards to 630 students and education professionals today for their accomplishments in the New Taipei City Junior High School Vocational Competition; the Mayor also recognized the 40 schools for their outstanding records. In his speech, Mayor Chu said that the awards handed out today are not any less impressive than the Mayoral Recognition Awards. In the vocational education system, the mayor noted, he saw commendable efforts from all specializations, including construction, auto maintenance, manufacturing, cosmetology, culinary studies and more. The mayor encouraged the students to work earnestly at developing their talents and make great future contributions to society.

Mayor Chu said that each child is capable of great things when society prioritizes her or him. Taiwan’s growth until this day, the mayor continued, is a direct result of the hard work from all industries and vocations. Thus, the mayor said that he places great emphasis on vocational education and he asked the all of people involved in education to also value vocational education. The mayor also encouraged the educators to nurture the students, prepare the students for professional licensing and train them to use their talents fully.

During the ceremony, the mayor handed out awards to the students, shook their hands and had pictures taken with them. Among these students are first-place winner in restaurant services — Sanduo Junior High’s Yuxue Lin, first-place winner in culinary studies — Fuhe Junior High’s Peijun Chen, first-place winner in hairdressing — Luzhuo Junior High’s Jingshan Hong, and first-palce in interior wiring — Zhengde Junior High’s Jiaxun Ye.

The Education Department reported there were 528 students, 31 competition instructors and 71 outstanding vocational educators and staff recognized in this event. 29 schools were involved in the competition and the awards ceremony, and 11 colleges and universities assisted by promoting vocational education and by providing campus tours.

The Education Department indicated the awardees were distinguished performers selected from 1,721 total participants. The competition saw twelve vocations represented; they were “Machinery,” “Power Machinery,” “Electrical Machinery and Electronics,” “Hospitality,” “Food,” “Home Economics,” “Business and Management,” “Civil Engineering and Architecture,” “Agriculture,” “Maritime,” and “Arts” and had 29 themed competitive events. The department hosted this competition as a part of the effort to enable students to express themselves and apply what they have learned in school.
