Mayor Chu Presented Prizes at Immigrants Cultural Show

The “2011 New Immigrants Cultural Show” took place in Zhongyi Elementary School of Luzhou District today (11/6). 462 new residents entered the competition and Mayor Erik Chu attended the award ceremony. Mayor Chu awarded groups and individuals that accomplished in the area of international education promotions. A mother and two daughters from Cambodia won first place of family ballads. They expressed their love and enjoy living in New Taipei City.

The venue was filled by exotic atmosphere in the afternoon. Mayor Chu said there are approximately 86,000 immigrants living in New Taipei City, and about 30,000 of their children are enrolled in schools. New Taipei City welcomes new immigrants.

Education Department hosted the cultural show to improve immigrants’ Chinese proficiency. All participated immigrants are students at Chinese focus classes at different schools to improve their language skills.

Different contests were available at the show and are divided into five major categories. Winner of the New Year Sayings Hui-Rui Sun is from Wenshan Junior High School and she immigrated from Cambodia.


According to the education department there are 450,000 immigrants in Taiwan and 86,000 of them are in New Taipei City, about 1/5 of the total number. 53,000 are from Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. 32,000 others are from other countries.
