Five Major Policies Mark New Taipei City Mayor’s First Inaugural Anniversary

Presiding over City Government conference today (12/27), New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu, who had just passed his 1st inaugural anniversary, said that after government’s promotion of the five major policies throughout the year - anti-corruption, service efficiency, safety, construction, and renovation - around 30% of citizens felt the improvement of New Taipei City and over 80% of citizens have pride in the city. Expressing his gratitude toward support from the citizens, Mayor Chu emphasized that the government will keep striving for making New Taipei City an even better place.

In the past year, New Taipei City Government has been promoting the five major policies respectively on anti-corruption, service efficiency, safety, construction, and renovation. Mayor Chu points out that the policy on anti-corruption is the foundation of all governmental affairs, and the government has been paying a lot of effort to eliminate corruption by inspecting hospitals, academic institutions, and the local public sector, which have long been dubbed as the source of all corruptions.

As to the policy on service efficiency, Mayor Chu said that despite suboptimal performances by a few specific agencies, the government has achieved palpable improvements on applications processing, licensing services, citizen inquiries, and government feedbacks. He also directs that the whole government administration team shall neither have bureaucratic attitude nor self-departmentalism.

Safety is the third major policy Mayor Chu emphasizes. On the part of public safety, the government has been conducting inspection on illicit buildings to protect citizens’ lives and properties; On the part of social security, the government has also been protecting families at risk and implementing new policies on social securities and social welfare. Most importantly, the government cares about the feeling of every citizen and will continue its effort on preventing social incidents to ensure safety in the society.

In addition, expediting public constructions is always one of the citizens’ expectations from governmental functions. Mayor Chu said the transportation infrastructures are vital to life of the citizens, and the government has been working on “3 Rings & 3 Lines” extension to Taipei MRT, established pre-MRT bus services, and finished constructing many expressways, roads, and bridges.

As to the cooperation between Taipei City and New Taipei City, Mayor Chu said Taipei City Government and New Taipei City Government will jointly host the “Twin Taipei Cities Bridges Decorations Event” on New Year’s Day, featuring decorations of twelve cross-river bridges by LED lights. The event will completes Mayor Chu’s proposed “Plan for Manhattanizing Tamsui River”, which President Ma Yingjiu openly praised and has always wanted to conduct during his term as Taipei City Mayor. From Mayor Chu’s recount, President Ma was very impressed that Chu can accomplish this achievement in only one year.

Lastly, referring to the renovation most expect from a new city, Mayor Chu said New Taipei City Government will increase the scale of many international events, including the famous Hohaiyan Rock Festival and Pingsi Sky Lantern Festival. The Happy Christmas City, which boasts the largest Christmas carnival and highest Christmas tree in Taiwan, is another fine example of successful big event embodying renovation in New Taipei City.

With the five major policies successfully carried out, Mayor Chu knew that New Taipei City can thrive and its citizens can live stably with happiness. With what are accomplished and what remains to be achieved, New Taipei City Government will continue on its quest to make New Taipei City a better place for living.
